Immersive Artist Aural State Releases New Music, Prepares For Tour
Published on 5/20/2024
The underground music scene in virtual reality (VR) continues to grow, and more of its artists are hitting the road to showcase their talents in front of live audiences. One of the artists leading this movement is Aural State, who has mastered the art of performing both in physical venues and in VR—all while traveling with a fully equipped studio built into her van.
Recently featured in Metaculture, Aural State shared insights into her latest EP, Fragments of a Digital Mind, a tribute to the trance anthems of the early 2000s. Tracks like Sonder demonstrate the EP’s gradual progression and classic trance feel, offering a timeless connection to the genre’s roots.
In the interview, Aural State revealed what it’s like to juggle life on the road with frequent DJ sets in VR. She spoke about the technical challenges of performing in different locations multiple times a week, requiring her to find and lock onto specific frequency bands for streaming. Despite the constant change of scenery, VR provided her with a sense of consistency, allowing her to maintain friendships and a creative flow no matter where she was.
She also touched on the most memorable places she’s experienced during her travels. “Cities after 3 a.m. have this unique magic,” she said, citing late-night explorations in Kyoto, Los Angeles, and Montreal as major sources of inspiration.
When asked about the future of music production in VR, Aural State expressed optimism but acknowledged the limitations of current technology. Still, the intimacy of VR performances, where she can interact closely with the crowd, is something she greatly values. At the same time, she believes the energy of physical events, where the music can be felt throughout the entire body, remains irreplaceable.
Aural State also spoke passionately about the LGBTQ+ community in VR, which has given her a safe space for self-discovery and connection. “I wouldn’t be here today without the VR community,” she shared, expressing gratitude to those who helped her navigate some of her darkest times.
As Aural State continues to push the boundaries of immersive music, fans can look forward to more releases and events. Her upcoming single Half Moon, from the Fragments of a Digital Mind EP, will drop soon, and she’s planning a renegade party in Los Angeles this August, featuring unreleased tracks in a back-to-back set with ju.no.
Stay tuned for more updates from Aural State as she bridges the gap between physical and virtual worlds with her innovative music and performances.
